What is manga and anime exactly?

Manga and anime are a distinctive style of Japanese comics (manga) and animation (anime) known for slick graphics and a diverse range of genre.  First coined by the celebrated print designer Katsushika Hokusai in the early 19th century, ‘manga’ roughly translated as ‘funny pictures’, has grown considerably in popularity and scope since the 1950s.  Manga now includes genres ranging from sports to business and even cooking, appealing to a wide range of audiences.  The popularity of anime soon followed suit, bringing to life all the vitality and diversity much loved by avid readers of manga.

Today manga and anime are enjoyed the world over including here in Hawaii.  With many local kids growing up immersed in Japanese culture taught by the elder generation, it is only natural for them use this art form as an appropriate method of expression.
